The 15th century marked the ca tru's heyday as a musical genre. Ca tru is also known as Hat a dao, Hat cua dinh, Hat cua quyen, hat co dau, hat nha to, hat nha tro or hat ca cong.

With profound cultural values, on October 1, 2009, ca tru of Vietnam was officially recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in needs of urgent safeguarding.
