Rituals and tug of war game, Viet Nam

Tug of war is a cultural practice, a form of community activity that has been dated for a long time and become a popular game in paddy rice farming countries in East Asia and Southeast Asia, typically Korea, Cambodia, the Philippines and Vietnam. The value of beliefs and rituals is the core and oldest element of the tug of war, expressed through taboos, rules from the process of selecting zippers, pulling materials to the players, as well as the rules. Thereby, tug of war is regarded as a sacred ritual simulating the power of natural forces such as the sun, water sources, floods, drought.
