Stele of Doctors at Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam, Viet Nam

Van Mieu's stele consists of 82 steles engraved with epitaphs in honor of the Vietnamese Confucian doctorate (Dinh) of the Late Le and Mac dynasties (1442 to 1779). These are the only doctoral steles in the world with a registration (epitaph) that not only list the doctors who passed exams in nearly 300 years (from 1442 to 1779) but also recorded the history of examinations and philosophy of the dynasty on education, training and use of talents.

The epitaphs also clearly state the date of stele making, the names of drafters and erectors, all of which confirms the authenticity, originality and uniqueness of the document. The epitaphs, compiled by famous cultural and intellectual celebrities of the country, are basically priceless literary works. Each stele is an exquisite and unique sculpture with highly stylized decorations. In 2010, UNESCO recognized 82 steles of the post-doctoral examinations of the Late Le and Mac dynasties in Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam (Hanoi) as a World Documentary Heritage under the UNESCO's the Memory of the World.
