According to the 2024 Holiday Money report released by the UK's Post Office, Hoi An has become the cheapest destination in the world for UK travelers. In the 18 years of publishing the rankings, 2024 marks the first year that the ancient town of Hoi An has topped the list of long-haul destinations with the lowest costs for UK tourists, surpassing Bali (Indonesia), Penang (Malaysia), and Phuket (Thailand).
The Post Office's global Holiday Money report is an annual event published for the past 18 years, ranking 40 tourist destinations worldwide from cheapest to most expensive.
The ranking of destinations compiled by the Post Office is based on the average prices of 8 tourist items in 40 tourist cities around the world.
These essential items include a cup of coffee, a beer, a can of Coca-Cola, a bottle of water, a tube of sunscreen, a bottle of insect repellent, a three-course dinner for two, and a bottle of wine.
According to the report, the average spending on these 8 items for each tourist when visiting Hoi An is estimated at around $64.
A liter of beer in Hoi An costs only $1.5, a can of Coca-Cola costs $1, a tube of sunscreen costs $4, and a three-course dinner for two costs $50.
The second place goes to Cape Town (South Africa). The capital of South Africa was knocked off the top spot in 2023 due to a 5% price increase, resulting in an average shopping cost of $68.
The third place goes to the city of Mombasa (Kenya) with an average shopping cost of $69.
Tokyo (Japan) climbed 4 places from 2023 and ranked fourth after costs decreased by 16.2% to $74.
The city of Algarve (Portugal) is the only European destination to make it into the top 5, with an average cost of $75 for shopping services.
At the bottom of the rankings, the town of Tamarindo (Costa Rica), known as the world's most expensive destination, has an average price of around $170, followed by New York City (USA).
