Interpreter or guide – what is the difference

Role	Best suited to
Escort interpreter	Accompanies you through meetings, negotiations, medical consultations, factory purchases or partner visits. The focus is accurate rendering of what is said, not tour commentary.
Licensed tour guide	Accompanies a sightseeing group, provides commentary, keeps the schedule and handles problems along the way. Guides working in Korea hold the licence required under local regulations.
Shopping assistant	Accompanies you through department stores, Dongdaemun, Myeongdong or wholesale districts; helps with prices, negotiation, tax refunds and shipping arrangements.
Conference and event interpreter	For seminars, press conferences and staged programmes. The number of interpreters and the mode of interpreting are set by the scale of the programme.

Languages and arrangements

Vietnamese – Korean is the principal pairing, covering most of our groups.
English – Korean where the party includes international members or the documents are in English.
Available by half day, full day or consecutive days; several interpreters can be assigned to a larger party.
For specialist content – medical, technical or legal – please send materials in advance so terminology can be prepared.

Our experience

Two things worth weighing. First, interpreter and guide are different roles – someone excellent in a meeting room is not necessarily the right person to lead a sightseeing day, and the reverse is equally true; tell us the purpose of the trip so we assign the right person rather than the cheapest one. Second, for important meetings, sending documents, price lists or medical records one or two days ahead makes a marked difference: the interpreter arrives with the terminology in hand and the session runs far more smoothly. And if your party already has a private car, keep the interpreter in the same vehicle – easier to brief, and no separate travel cost.

Policy

Booking, payment and cancellation policy

Rates are quoted individually by role, number of sessions or days, subject complexity and working location.
A session is counted against agreed hours; time beyond that is charged at the rate stated in the quotation.
Travel and accommodation costs for assignments outside the agreed area are charged separately and stated in advance.
For specialist subjects, please send materials at least one or two days ahead so terminology can be prepared.
Guides working in Korea are assigned in accordance with local licensing requirements.
Cancellation or change must be made 48 hours (noon local time) in advance. Cancellation less than 48 to 24 hours before is charged 50%; less than 24 hours, 100%.
Payment via bank transfer or as mutually agreed; for card payments, TGROUP provides a Onepay link.
